Work at the intersection of object, space and meaning.

Kessels & Granger DesignWorks is an internationally oriented design studio founded on a shared interest in art, design and material culture. The practice is driven by a continuous exploration of form, function and visual clarity.

A Shared Practice

Founded after graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven, Steven Kessels and James Granger established a collaboration built on shared curiosity and a mutual understanding of design as both a discipline and a craft.

What began as a common interest in art and object-making evolved into a long-term practice, now recognised for its precise and considered approach to design across multiple disciplines.

Rooted in a strong appreciation for form, material and cultural context, the studio develops work that balances clarity, intent and functionality. Each project is guided by the belief that design gains strength through reduction, precision and relevance.

Practice

The studio operates at the intersection of product design, graphic systems and design strategy. Each project is approached as a balance between concept, material and function, with a focus on clarity and precision.

Work is developed to be both emotionally resonant and technically feasible, ensuring relevance across context and application.

Experience

Kessels & Granger works across a broad range of sectors, including automotive, maritime, lifestyle, musical instruments and architecture.
This diversity informs a flexible and research-driven approach to design.

Each context contributes to a broader understanding of form, function and material, strengthening the ability to move between disciplines while maintaining a consistent design language.

Approach

Beyond execution, the studio is involved in design thinking and strategic development. Projects often begin with defining direction, structure and intent before moving into form and detail.

The focus lies on reducing complexity and creating solutions that are clear, functional and relevant over time.

Collaboration

The studio works with both emerging entrepreneurs and established organisations. Each collaboration is built on trust, dialogue and long-term engagement.

Clients are closely involved throughout the process, ensuring that outcomes remain aligned with both ambition and context while allowing space for exploration and refinement.

C-Mine Studio

The Kessels & Granger studio is located within C-mine, a historic industrial site redefined as a center for creativity, innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The studio is based in the former Grands Bureaux of C-mine, a landmark building that has been carefully restored and awarded the Flemish Monument Prize in 2013. The setting provides a unique environment where heritage and contemporary design practice coexist.

Positioned in the industrial heart of Europe, the studio is closely connected to the surrounding creative and manufacturing regions, including cities such as Brussels, Antwerp, Liège, Maastricht, Eindhoven and Aachen.

C-mine itself functions as a hub for creative exchange, fostering collaboration between disciplines and supporting innovation across visual culture, design and media.

Studio &
Workflow

The studio combines traditional design methods with advanced digital workflows. Hand sketching, model making and material exploration are integrated with CAD-based development, 3D modelling and high-end rendering techniques.

Rapid prototyping and 3D printing allow ideas to move seamlessly from concept to physical form, supported by a curated design library and a focus on precision throughout the process.

Steven Kessels

Steven’s approach is grounded in material sensitivity, proportion and structural clarity. His work focuses on translating abstract ideas into tangible, functional objects.

With a background in design, architecture and art history, and trained at the Design Academy Eindhoven, Steven moves fluently between concept development and hands-on making. His perspective is further shaped by studies in antiques and fine art, giving his work a layered understanding of material culture and context.

Based in Brussels, he is active within different creative and cultural networks. His practice is informed by a deep interest in art and antiques, which continuously feeds into his own design language and artistic output.

James Granger

James brings a strong emphasis on visual systems, conceptual thinking and contextual design, shaping the broader narrative and application of the studio’s work.

His practice spans product design, visual communication and computer-aided styling, where sketching, form exploration and rendering are used as tools to develop clear and resolved design directions.

He graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven, where he developed a research-driven approach to design grounded in conceptual clarity and material understanding.
